Tutorial for Making Drawstring Purse

Supplies

  • Fabric for outside of purse (need 2 squares less than 12 inches x 12 inches)
  • Matching fabric for lining (need 2 squares less than 12 inches x 12 inches)
  • Fabric, cord, or leather for strap
  • Fringe – enough to wrap around sides and bottom
  • Matching thread
  • Fabric scissors
  • Sewing machine and needles
  • Safety pin

Steps

  1. Cut front and back piece into U shape (I used black velveteen pieces already beaded).
  2. Cut 2 lining pieces at least 2 1/2 inches longer than front and back pieces
  3. Take front piece, right side facing up. Pin fringe in place going in opposite direction from how you want it to hang. Pin back piece on top of fringe, right side facing down. (Front and back pieces will be pinned together with right sides facing and the fringe sandwiched in between.)
  4. Sew front and back pieces together at bottom and sides
  5. Flip right side out so that fringe hangs down. Hem top inward for stability.
  6. Take lining pieces and fold sides 1/4 inch on each side. Sew (this is to hide the rough edges and make sure the lining can fit in the purse).
  7. Sew lining front and back together at bottom and sides, right sides facing in, leaving top two inches of sides unsewed.
  8. Place lining inside the front and back pieces.
  9. Fold top of lining over 1/4 inch. Fold again so that the folded edge covers the hemline of the outside piece. Pin and sew to front and back pieces.
  10. Thread cord or leather through for strap ( a safety pin helps with this!). Purse is done!
